At the November meeting of the Parish Council the main topics discussed were:
REPORTED CRIMES
PCSO Derek Howard sent written report. There have been 6 reported crimes in Gurnard during October, compared with 3 last year. Councillors were pleased that following their concerns, the Police presence at Gurnard Pines and the surrounding area has increased and it is comforting to see the Police van patrolling the area.
GRANTS
The Grant Panel met again ahead of the meeting to consider another grant application. The Solent Singers were awarded £100.00.
TOILETS
Everyone was pleased to hear that the appeal lodged against payment of business rates for the block has been successful and that the £1803.93 paid will be refunded. The potential planning application to convert the toilet block into a café and public toilets is not being taken forward at this time, so funds for the maintenance and repairs to the block will be included in the budget for next year. The Parish Council has decided, subject to a structural survey and legal advice, to take on the freehold of the toilet block to ensure its continued future.
LITTER PICK
At the October village litter pick, no residents were present to assist. It was decided to take the event from the Parish Council calendar but ask all residents to ensure that they do not drop litter or allow dogs to foul the village. If everyone takes pride in the village and picks up litter outside their own property, or reports any major issues to Island Roads the village will continue to look beautiful.
GURNARD IN BLOOM
The Parish Council recognises the work that Jennie and her nephew Ellis have undertaken, but feel that the planted verges in Worsley Road need some major work to remove brambles, holly and weeds. Without further volunteers, this work is too much for only two people, so up to £120.00 was set aside to employ a local contractor to tidy up the beds with a community working party completing the work in the next few weeks. Jennie is hopeful that more volunteers will come forward to assist. A condition survey of the all planters and troughs is being carried before the next meeting.
SAFETY OF THE PLAY AREA
A resident contacted Councillor Nolan expressing fears for the safety of the users of the play area on The Green as there is no safety barrier at the roadside. The Isle of Wight Council (as landowners) have been asked to carry out a Risk Assessment and share the results with the Parish Council.
NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN
After five years of work, the completed plan plus all the supporting evidence is finally ready for submission to the IW Council and Examination. It is hoped that a referendum to collect resident’s views of the plan will be held alongside the council election in May 2017. Many thanks to all those residents who have taken part in helping the Parish Council to complete the plan.
MERRY CHRISTMAS
The Parish Council would like to wish all residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
