GURNARD PARISH COUNCIL REPORT FOR THE GURNARD NEWS MARCH EDITION
At the February meeting of the Parish Council the main topics discussed were:
POLICE REPORT
PSCOs Howard and PSCO Gray attended the meeting and provided a written report. There was one reported crime in Gurnard during January this year compared with four for the same period last year. A question was asked about Police involvement for untaxed vehicles left on the highway. PSCO Howard explained that although it is against the law to park a vehicle on the highway which is untaxed, the Police can only get involved if they stop the vehicle whilst it is being driven. Parked vehicles are the responsibility of the Highway Authority (the Isle of Wight Council) who have delegated authority to Island Roads (via the PFI contract) for their removal.
COMMUNITY GRANTS
Another £200.00 was awarded by councillors for a grant to the Solent Singers. This leaves another £350.00 in the budget for organisations to apply for.
TOILETS ON THE GREEN
The Parish Council has finally negotiated the Freehold terms which gives full responsibility for the toilets on The Green. £1,000.00 has been provided from the Isle of Wight Council towards the refurbishment of the block. The Parish Council has set aside another £5,000 from reserves for this project.
COCKLETON MEADOW
The Chairman of the Friends of Cockleton Meadow provided a short report following the recent AGM. Councillors have agreed to fund the installation and weekly emptying of a dog waste bin at the entrance to the site. This will supplied by Island Roads who have offered to move the pedestrian entrance back into the site to make it safer, during the installation, free of charge. Councillors have requested the sight of all committee notes in the future.
GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN
The Parish Council has agreed to support a “clean up” of Gurnard on the weekend of March 2 – 4 2018. This initiative is being supported by the Isle of Wight Council, though the Keep Britain Tidy organisation. Councillors will be meeting at 3pm on Friday 2 March by the Watersedge Café to litter pick the beach and again at the Village Hall on Saturday 3 March at 10am to litter pick various roads. Please support this to “make a difference” to your village. Councillors are hoping that people will supply their own gardening gloves and the Parish Council will supply the bags. Posters and flyers are being produced to advertise the event.
GROUNDS MAINTENANCE ON THE GREEN
The Parish Council is paying for the grass cutting, litter picking and bin emptying on The Green via an Isle of Wight Council all Island contract. This contract is due for renewal on April 1 2019. The Parish Council agreed to continue this arrangement as it is the most cost effective, but are only prepared to pay up to an additional 5% for the service.
FUTURE PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS
The next full Parish Council meeting will be at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 14 March 2018. Residents are welcome to attend all meetings, which are usually held at the Gurnard Village Hall, Westbrook Lane.
