GURNARD PARISH COUNCIL REPORT FOR THE GURNARD NEWS DECEMBER/JANUARY EDITION
At the November meeting of the Parish Council the main topics discussed were:
POLICE REPORT
PSCO Derek Howard was unable to attend the meeting but provided a written report. There were three reported crimes in October this year compared to four for the same period last year.
Following the resignation of the chair, Councillor Nolan was proposed, seconded and elected to serve as chair until the Annual meeting of the Parish Council in May 2019. He then chaired the meeting.
100 YEARS SINCE THE END OF WORLD WAR ONE COMMEMORATIONS
After 14 months of planning in conjunction with All Saints Church, the Parish Council attended the 100 years commemoration since the end of World War One. The village looked stunning with the poppy veil on the clock and poppies throughout Worsley Road. Flanders Field was depicted at Gurnard Press with a cenotaph in Worsley Road. The Art exhibition held at the village hall raised funds for the Royal British Legion and sold some stunning work. The usual parade of uniformed young people was joined by 10 drummers and some veterans. The church was completely packed with some having to stand during the service. The Exhortation & Kohima Epitaph were read by Deputy Lord Lieutentant Colonel Carron Snagge who laid a wreath together with Councillor Fuller for the IW Council, Councillor Nolan for the Parish Council and a beaver and guide on behalf of the young uniformed services. This was followed by tea and cake in the Village Hall which was kindly provided by Gurnard Women’s Institute. The WI refused to take any payment for the refreshments provided, so the Parish Council has given a donation to the Royal British Legion of £50.00 in their name. The event finished with the lighting of a brazier on the beach at Gurnard as the sun was setting. With a few words from Reverend Amanda the day was complete. A true village event.
COCKLETON MEADOW
The first meeting of the Cockleton Meadow Working Group was reported on with several recommendations being suggested to the Parish Council. To reflect the heritage of the site, the name will be changed to “Old School Meadow” and a new sign purchased. Over the winter, when little maintenance is required, the Parish Council will employ a contractor if needed.
GURNARD PINES
Councillor Fuller requested a sum of £50.00 be made available for tea and cakes for residents of the site to attend a meeting with several agencies who can offer them support. Nearly 14% of the electorate of Gurnard now live there. Councillor Fuller will report back on the success of the afternoon.
NEW CLERK
After 4.5 years I am moving on and leaving Gurnard Parish Council. I have found my time at Gurnard to be very interesting and enjoyable but the endless round of weekly agenda setting, sending out papers and then the meetings the following week have become too much for me and family commitments. The Parish Council has recruited a Gurnard resident as a locum clerk – Mrs Katie Riley (she is already qualified and experienced as the Chale Clerk) who will be in post by the time you read this magazine. Thank you for all the support I have received from residents in my time.
COUNCILLORS
For various personal reasons there are now 3 vacancies for Parish Councillors. These are advertised on the Parish Council notice board and if an election is not called, will be available for Co-option in the New Year. Gurnard is a lovely community and the Parish Council can make a big difference, so please think about being part of it.
FUTURE PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS
The next full Parish Council meetings will be at 7.00 pm on Wednesday 12 December 2018 and Wednesday 9th January 2019. Residents are welcome to attend all meetings, which are usually held at the Gurnard Village Hall, Westbrook Lane. Please check the Parish notice board and/or the Parish Council’s website for meeting confirmation and the agendas – www.gurnardpc.co.uk.
